Eating Disorders

Anorexia nervosa is classified as an eating disorder where sufferers have an obsession with food and are overly concerned with being thin. They are often so terrified of gaining weight that they go to extreme measures to lose or maintain a body weight that is below normal for their age and height.

Eating Disorders are a growing concern in today’s society and have been on the increase over the last few decades. Some causes of eating disorders are associated with the “ideal skinny figure” promoted by fashion and the media. In the end many people strive for modern culture’s thin ideal. When these factors are coupled with unhealthy and unrealistic weight goals, a dangerous fear of gaining weight, can follow. While eating disorders do involve obsessive behaviors regarding food intake and body-image, they are often deeply rooted in emotional issues of control, self-esteem and self-criticism. Affecting mostly women, Eating Disorders can result in serious health problems and even death if not treated.

People with bulimia nervosa struggle with their binge eating disorder. They often feel that they are out of control during their binging sessions and then feel tremendous shame and guilt afterwards. It is the self-induced purging that makes them feel a release of this common nervous tension and guilt.

Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by the eating of a large amount of food in a
short space of time (binging) followed by self-induced vomiting, or excessive use of
Laxatives, diuretics, fasting or exercise to ‘rid’ the body of the food (purging).
