Dogs, animals, and even humans learn basically the same way. Certain behaviors are reinforced. Behaviors that result in good things happening will increase in frequency. Behaviors that result in bad things happening will decrease in frequency. Easy enough. There have been many studies done on this topic (of course anything is open to debate), but most certified animal trainers, psychologists, and behaviorists believe that animals (and people too) learn best when we focus on the positive. That is, simply reinforce the good stuff and ignore everything else.
