A urinary tract infection (also referred to as a UTI) is a bacterial infection affecting the urinary tract. When bacteria from the rectal area enter the urinary tract via the urethra to the bladder and multiply in the urine, an infection occurs.

The human urinary system consists of two kidneys, two ureters, a bladder, two sphincter muscles, and a urethra. These organs, tubes, and muscles filter out excess fluids and waste products from the bloodstream, which are then expelled as urine.

Nephritis essentially involves the inflammation of the kidneys. It is the responsibility of the kidneys to filter out waste and excess fluid from the body, and when swelling occurs, their ability to filter properly is reduced. When this happens, the body accumulates both excess water and waste in the blood stream, while blood and protein are lost in the urine.

Resembling grains of sand (usually yellow or brown in color), kidney stones are small stones that are lodged in the kidney or appear in the urine. These grains vary in size. They can also be single stones.

Cystitis is an infection of the bladder, and is also commonly referred to as a urinary tract infection (UTI).
